Back to the Drawing Board

Only 4 out of 17 Canadian players made it through the PGA’s second stage Q-school. I wanted to be one of them. But, I guess I’ve got to wait another year.

Coaches from the RCGA like Doug Roxbourgh told me when I started on the pro tour that it might take a few years. He knows what it takes---experience. I did not want to believe him.

It looks like he’s right. Most of the players who are going to the final stage are older than those who did not make it. There are always exceptions though. I sure want to be one of them.

I’ve learned from my first year as a pro that I need feedback on a regular basis. I don’t like the feeling of going into a tournament with parts of my game not quite where I’d like them to be. That’s happened to me too much this year. I will set up my coaching better for the New Year.

I’ve got some serious work ahead of me to take my game up a notch or two.

My goal for 2007 is to get more consistent lower scores for each tournament. It means wasting less shots and having more confidence in what I am doing for each shot.

I’ll be back on the Grey Goose Gateway Tour and I’ll try out for more Nationwide events.

I am grateful for all the support I’ve had this year from family, friends, coaches and sponsors. It has kept me going and made it possible for me to play golf. Thanks to everyone.

Relaxed Under Pressure

Like the pre-qualifying stage of Q-School, the first stage this week was another wild experience. I found out again that I play better under pressure.

After two great rounds, my game derailed. My tee shots were all over the place and they finally caught up with me on the third round.

I went from tied for 15th to 43rd. As only 26 spots plus ties would make the cut line, things weren’t looking good going into the fourth round.

Maybe it was sheer determination. I knew what I needed to do. I loved the feeling of pressure. It kept me going.

It must be the zone the greats talk about. Everything gets blocked out. Total focus and concentration. I’d like to get it back more often.

Next week, I move onto the second qualifying stage.
